A trip to Australia is a real bucket-list winner, but there are a lot of destinations to choose from. The nature of the country’s layout means that you often have to pick just one city to visit, as there is such a long travelling time between them. So with that in mind, how do you pick the city to visit? Here are some of the best, as well as the reasons why you should give them a try.

Sydney

What’s not to love about Sydney? The most iconic sights in Australia are here, including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall and the Harbour Bridge. There are plenty of hotel options in Sydney to choose from as this is the premier destination for tourists in Australia. There’s a thriving foodie scene as well as bars and pubs as far as the eye can see. You can take a tour around the harbour on a boat, or enjoy the nightlife with some new Aussie friends. There’s also Bondi Beach just around the corner for a day spent lying on the sun – or surfing the waves. Sydney has a little bit of everything, and if it’s culture that you want, look no further than the museums and art galleries that dot the city. It’s perfect for just about any kind of traveller.

Melbourne

Melbourne is another strong contender for being the number one holiday destination in Australia. The independent coffee stores of this city will rival any in the world, and you can be sure to find foodie treats galore as well. Museums, art galleries, zoos, and more all contribute to making it one of the most exciting destinations to go for. You can pick up fresh produce at farmer’s markets, or browse shopping malls for designer gear. There’s a real rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney which goes back a long way – now’s your chance to figure out for yourself which one of them is the most appealing.

Canberra

Why not consider going to the capital of Australia for your holiday? It is chronically underappreciated, especially when you consider how unique it is. The city was built purposefully to be a capital, and it shows in the neat layout as well as the plentiful areas of greenery. There are a lot of monuments and important historic buildings to see here, as well as all of the normal attractions of any city – nightlife, food, entertainment, culture, and museums. There’s definitely more to Canberra than you may have been led to believe, so don’t rule it out just yet.

Cairns

If you like sunshine all year round, even in the winter, then Cairns can provide it. The waterfront is beautiful and is right next to the city centre, with a saltwater lagoon complete with sandy beach for your sunbathing and swimming needs. All in the same precinct you can find cafes, bars, restaurants, play areas for the kids, skate parks, volleyball courts, and more – all of the entertainment you could need for the day. You can also head up into the hills for rainforest views and amazing experiences in nature. This is all without mentioning the markets, zoos, museums, aquariums, shopping centres, and so on – all found in this thriving modern city.

Brisbane

There’s another artificial beach in Brisbane, to counteract the fact that there are bull sharks in the river – a manmade set of pools where families come to enjoy a barbecue on their days off. You can climb the Kangaroo Cliffs or go for a run at Kangaroo Point, and stroll around with a picnic on the beautiful parkland in the city. Nights out are a lot of fun here, and there is art and culture to be found in the streets. The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is an absolute highlight of Brisbane that you won’t want to miss – a favourite with travellers and locals alike, it’s the place to go if you want to cuddle a koala.

With so many options to choose from, you are definitely going to have your work cut out for you. You might just find that you end up booking more than one holiday in Australia – after all, it would be rude not to try them all.
