Mozilla announces Geode location plugin for Firefox gadgets | Comments Off
Mozilla has just announced the release of its Geode plugin for interfacing with web applications using location data. The plugin basically allows a web page to request your location while you're surfing the web. Geode then asks you if you will share your location with that particular website and allows you to either let the site access your location just this once or any time you visit the site. Geode works by determining your location based on the wireless access points closest to you. Mozilla has made this possible by forming a partnership with Loki, a leading wifi location service provider. ...

Google Opening My Location API to Developers gadgets, on the go | (8)
When Google released their "My Location" feature for Google Maps Mobile last November, it allowed millions of cell phone users without GPS to see their location, perform searches and get directions based on their location. This works by triangulating the location of the cell phone based on the signal from the cell towers and though it's not perfect, it really helped in adding context to Google Maps Mobile (GMM) searches. Now Google will be opening up their Location API so that 3rd party developers can access your location for new features. Jesse Newland found a way to access this information ...

Killer FireEagle Hack for iPhone gadgets, on the go | Comments Off
If you have a jailbroken iPhone and want to update FireEagle with your position on the go, Jesse Newland has created just the script for you. He uses the native Google Maps location feature to send your current location to FireEagle every 5 minutes. I'd strongly recommend that you have a basic understanding of unix or linux before jumping in here, but his instructions look fairly detailed to me. I've been using Navizon to update my location on FireEagle and on my Map and Google Gadget. It would be cool to see this hack turned into a full fledged iPhone app ...

Google Continues Static Map API Push on the go | Comments Off
Yesterday Google announced a number of improvements to the still relatively new Static Maps API including more marker and path options, language transliteration and improved marker image file format support. The Static Map API can help you to create a quick map of a trip or location to post on your blog without having to learn how to develop in Google Maps. They even have a nifty Wizard that will walk you through adding the pins and lines to your map. However, I think that there's another potential application of the Google Static Maps API on the mobile web. Google ...

Navizon Enables Fire Eagle Location Updates on the go | (10)
After hearing a rumor that Navizon has created an uplink for the Yahoo Fire Eagle platform, I just had to check it out. I've poked around and confirmed that Mexens, the company behind Navizon, has in fact created a method for you to pass your location to Fire Eagle. Navizon is the cell phone application that I use to update the Stalking Dave Map and my Google Gadget. You can use Navizon on your Windows Mobile Pocket PC, iPhone, Symbian or Java phone to track your location based on cell triangulation, Wifi, or GPS. All you have to do is ...
