Fring brings VoIP to the iPhone, at least over Wifi on the go | (1)
Fring just released version 2 of its integrated communications software to the iPhone App Store, including the ability to use both Skype and SIP voice calling when connected to a wifi hotspot. Apple has said that VoIP over wifi would be possible on the iPhone and Fring is the first to make it happen. For those that aren't familiar, Fring looks and acts like an IM client that includes voice technology. You can use it to IM your friends on AIM, GTalk, MSN or Yahoo or to make voice calls over Skype or any other SIP internet calling network. Your friends ...

Background processes come to jailbroken iPhones on the go | Comments Off
The iPhone backgrounder was recently released by developers as a way to keep applications running after they have been closed on a jailbroken iPhone. The iPhone was designed to terminate applications when closed out, but some users want the ability to keep IM or other applications running all day long or while performing other tasks. The implementation of the iPhone backgrounder is fairly simple. All you have to do after installing the application is to hold down the home button as you're closing an application to allow it to continue running. You can also tell the backgrounder to keep particular applications ...

How Facebook is edging out LinkedIn for professional networking on the go | (3)
Facebook has been experiencing loads of growth over the last couple of years, even edging out Myspace in terms of Unique Visitors for the first time this summer. While many people think of the professional networking site LinkedIn as catering to a slightly different niche, there are a number of things that point toward Facebook dominating the professional networking category as well. One of the most critical differentiators that allows Facebook to play in the professional networking arena is the fact that it's decidedly more grown-up than its rival Myspace. In professional circles between adults, it's rare to see people admit ...

Attack of the Download Store: Apple, Google, Nokia, Sony… gadgets, on the go | (1)
In the last few weeks, we've seen a bevy of announcements about new download store applications. This could be due to Apple's overwhelmingly successful iTunes model and recently launched App Store. It could also be due to the fact that more devices have enough bandwidth to make this a viable model, but whatever it is must be in the Kool-Aid of nearly every boardroom of device makers around the globe. While we initially saw this model become hugely successful for Apple with its iTunes for downloading music to people's iPods, the mobile phone industry is latching onto the idea in a ...

Apple and AT&T to charge extra for iPhone tethering? on the go | Comments Off
A rumor is circulating that Apple and AT&T may be in talks about a data plan for sharing your iPhone's internet connection with your laptop. This process, known as tethering is often an option on PDAs for users that pay for data connections. Gizmodo has a fairly legitimate looking email that Steve Jobs may be considering the move. Otherwise users that want to tether their laptop to an iPhone must jailbreak the phone in order to make it work. It's very surprising that Apple would close off this functionality on the iPhone. Although the recently released iPhone 3G has already been ...

Is the Mobile Web Set for Extinction? on the go | (1)
Last week, open source technologist and friend of mine, Erik Jacobs, wrote a post calling the mobile web an aging dinosaur. He cited faster networks, access to the full web and UMPC (Ultra-Mobile PC) class devices such as the iPhone as the reason for the mobile web's impending doom and destruction. Much of his argument is true. The mobile web is evolving at an incredibly rapid pace due in large part to the iPhone's superior web-browsing ability. However, I contend that no matter how much closer to the full web experience that we can come to on a hand-held device, ...
