The long awaited Blackberry Bold 9000 was released yesterday on AT&T’s 3G network. The long-awaited phone has been experiencing delays since its announcement in May, whipping Blackberry fans into a bit of a fervor. Yesterday was the first time I’ve heard of fans lining up to buy a Blackberry, usually a device reserved for Corporate email junkies.
The Blackberry Bold builds on the company’s reputation as a Corporate-capable email device with multimedia and camera features. The company has recently begun focusing on building its appeal to mass market customers that want excellent web and multimedia functionality built in.
The early arrivals at AT&T stores across the country could have just as well stayed home though. Walmart began offering the phone online yesterday as well, and for free after a $199 rebate. This is the second time in as many months that the massive discount retailer undersold a wireless carrier on a hot new release.
Last month it was the T-Mobile G1 powered by Google and sold by Walmart for $33.11 less than through the carrier. It will be interesting to see whether Walmart’s interest in cutting edge mobile devices continues and whether the company will continue to push smartphone prices even lower.
