In my opinion, Worms is one of the most classic game franchises in history for PC Gamers. It ranks right up there with Oregon Trail in terms of multiplayer fun and ease of play. As the casual gaming market is undergoing a resurgence via the Wii and mobile gaming platforms, Worms is a title that I’m happy to see come up again.
Last month, THQ announced that the release of Worms: A Space Oddity for the Wii platform. This will include the normal multi-player siege as well as single-player games. It’s always difficult to say how playable a game will be on the Wii platform until you see how they have implemented the controls. It was a fun game even without the level of interaction you can get from the Wiimote, so hopefully that remains in the Wii version. I wish I had heard of this sooner, but I’ll just have to pick it up and get out a review by next week.
Now THQ Mobile has announced that this year’s release of Worms on the mobile platform should be ready in June. They’re releasing the same title, Worms 2008: A Space Oddity.
Worms 2008 features a story of intergalactic Worm travellers exploring their solar system. The improved single-player campaign missions feature varying objectives to keep the player on their toes as they fight to defend installations, repair space crafts, collect rare minerals and battle to the death against alien races. With the space setting comes a host of new weapons, including the Impact Frag, Atom Packs and Cluster Frags, which are based around the classic Worms weapons but share all new artwork and names with Worms: A Space Oddity, released earlier this year for Nintendo Wii.
