So you’re eating healthy, getting plenty of sleep, and exercising regularly. Textbook formula for looking and feeling great, right? Almost, but there is one thing that could derail you from your path to success. In the United States, an estimated 24 million Americans use illegal drugs. This is the equivalent of eight percent of the United States’ population. That number keeps growing as more and more men are engaging in recreational drug use. It has been reported that men are three times as likely as women to use drugs regularly. Men are naturally prone to taking more risks, whether it be to appear more masculine or just to get the endorphins pumping. However, frequent drug use can be detrimental to not only your mental health, but your physical health as well.

Each type of drug will have different effects on your body, but did you know that drugs also affect men and women differently? Drug use can leading to haunting, irreversible physical effects. Depending on the type of drug you take, you can see changes such as increased acne, dull skin, scars, baldness, destruction of the cartilage in your nose, bronchitis, lung infection, kidney failure and even death.

Better Addiction Care compiled mugshot photos to provide examples of the haunting physical changes you can see from repetitive drug use.

A common misconception from users is that these are only extreme cases and while it might happen to others, they will be lucky enough to avoid the negative effects of frequent drug use. No one is immune to the side effects of abuse.  In order to keep yourself feeling healthy and living life to the fullest it is best to stay away from the use of drugs. The legal, health and social consequences are not worth the high- literally. The number one reason why people turn to drugs is because they are feeling some sort of void in their lives. If you keep a full and well-balanced life, you can keep your priorities in order. The goal is to thrive, not just to survive.
