Granted the new iPhone App from CNN sets the new gold standard for a mobile news application. But CNN is really going to charge you to download the application then serve you advertising on a daily basis?
The application has a ton of features, including headlines, customizable news and streaming video. It even sends you a push notification to let you know when major events will be streaming soon.
Also bundled in is an application to report news to CNN from your iPhone. With the millions of iPhone users, this could become a useful pipeline of leads and stories for the news organization.
It seems awkward to charge your community for their contribution. Not to mention short-sighted to charge up front when the long-term value of a user should be much greater.
Would you pay the two bucks for iReport? And would you think twice about sending in news?
