The new Archos 5 Internet Tablet is getting a lot of press for sporting better specs than the iPod Touch and Zune in terms of screen resolution and memory. Now let’s all keep in mind that this is a small tablet with a 5-inch screen and not an media player.
However, what Archos demonstrates here is the ability to quickly develop innovative and powerful high-end devices using Android. This change is what will allow for less expensive devices that are built around specific uses.
The benefit of Android is that developers can focus on writing new tools and interfaces because the underlying components are already there. Plus device makers can leverage existing Linux drivers to lower development costs and the App Store for useful applications.
What this means to consumers is that companies will be able to create highly customized devices. While the Archos Table offers a high-end media experience, other devices such as e-book readers, video-conferencing or home automation could also be around the corner.

Looks good. I’d like to think open solutions will gain a foothold, and eventually win in this space.
It probably doesn’t make a huge difference at the ultra-high end, where cost isn’t a critical factor, but for hobbyists, DIY-ers and other enthusiasts, the ability to develop, and otherwise mess with things is a big deal.
FLOSS FTW!
