Palm Pixi joins the Pre on Sprint

Palm’s next WebOS phone just got official over on Engadget and will be out on Sprint’s network later this year. The Palm Pixi is a smaller, simplified version of the Pre that aims to introduce new smartphone users to the Mobile Web.

The Palm Pre was just reduced to $150, so expect the Pixi to come in at a tidy $99 or so with two-year contract. This is a really great follow up to the Pre that improves upon the typing experience even though it does sacrifice some screen real estate.

The real surprise is that Palm decided to leave Wi-Fi out of the Pixi. While it does wear on battery life when left on, Wi-Fi provides the fastest mobile browsing experience possible on most smartphones.

WebOS has far too much potential to be plagued by hardware issues on the Pre and being only available on Sprint so far. Maybe the third phone will be the charm for embattled handset maker Palm?
