The Japanese mobile market has been notoriously difficult to crack for outside mobile phones. From standard mobile television to phone-based payment systems, American models have traditionally been unable to compete with Japanese technology.
However, the iPhone 3GS with 32 GB of memory is currently the best-selling mobile phone in Japan. The 3GS even beat out more technologically advanced models like the Sharp SH-06A to win over the hearts of Japanese users.
It’s hard to tell whether it’s the upgraded video features or mature application platform that are attracting new iPhone 3GS users in Japan. Either way, Apple has achieved penetration into a market that was once thought to be a lost cause for American device manufacturers.
Hopefully Japanese developers can create applications to make up the feature gap for the iPhone. It would be really great to see innovative Japanese features make it back to the US market.
