TeleNav Navigator launching for Android

Telenav Navigator coming for Android

One of the biggest shortfalls of new-fangled smartphones such as the iPhone and Android G1 has been the lack of a turn-by-turn navigation system to make good use of their embedded GPS. Now TeleNav is launching the first driving directions application for the Android platform in the TeleNav Navigator.

The software works much like a stand-alone GPS unit, giving voice propmpts for upcoming turns and displaying them on the G1′s full screen. TeleNav Navigator for the G1 also uses voice recognition input for addresses and destinations so that you can program it on the go.

TeleNav charges a monthly subscription rate of $9.99 per month for unlimited use of its Navigator software. You can get a free one month trail subscription by signing up here. Enter your email to get a coupon for the free month when the service officially launches for Android on Tuesday, February 24th.

It’s interesting to see that TeleNav stuck with its monthly license approach in launching Navigator for Android. In the long run, I’ll bet that this outdated licensing method championed by the carriers will be replaced with an annual license, not unlike Garmin for Windows Mobile.
