The Oregon Trail heading to the iPhone

Fans of the original Oregon Trail game for PC are in for a real treat as the game is being revamped for the iPhone. That is, unless the new version dies of dysentery on its way to the iTunes App Store.

For the uninitiated, the Oregon Trail casts you as the leader of a wagon train headed west on your way to, well, Oregon. The way is fraught with forks in the trail, stream crossing and the constant threat of death by hunger and disease.

Last year there was a Facebook app that revived the old Oregon Trail, but it didn’t stay true to the original nor improve upon it. The saddest feature lacking in the Facebook version was the ability to hunt (for food) along the trail which was replaced by a hapless random pick-a-card game.

For the iPhone, designers have revamped the graphics and game play to make it more interesting for iPhone owners. The graphics look quite good and screenshots from IGN hint at river crossings taking on a new life as a mini game and hopefully re-instating the proper hunting mini game.

I’ve tried a number of iPhone games and it’s hard to balance simple controls with long term playability. The Oregon Trail may be the first iPhone game that I absolutely, positively have to beat. At least, I sure hope so!
