Google Sync for iPhone and Windows Mobile

Google Sync for iPhone and Windows Mobile

If you use Google to manage your Contacts or Calendar, you know how obnoxious it can be to sync them with your iPhone or Windows Mobile phone. Now you can not only sync your Google Calendar and Contacts to your iPhone, you can keep them in sync with the latest Google Sync.

This capability was built into Android, Google’s mobile operating system, and now is being expanded to unclude other popular smartphone platforms. The Google Sync application competes with other cloud-based contact management systems like MobileMe and the open source Funambol service.

Google Sync for iPhone requires you to add another server connection in your Settings menu using an Exchange account to sync with Google’s server. The instructions strongly recommend backing up your contacts as the first sync will wipe them clean and copy whatever is in your Gmail.

In fact, Google licensed Microsoft’s ActiveSync technology for at least part of Google Sync. It’s not clear whether Google needed it specifically for Windows Mobile or to create the server itself. Microsoft is also expected to launch a sync service of its own in coming months after an accidental sneak preview.
