Chipotle’s Mobile Ordering application made a brief appearance on the iTunes App Store yesterday. The company’s servers were hammered by downloads of the first iPhone mobile ordering and payment application and had to remove it temporarily.
Chipotle Mobile Ordering allows you to select items from Chipotle’s menu and pay for them using a credit card. The the application directs you to the nearest Chipotle location to pick up your order. The system shares the same back-end as Chipotle’s online ordering interface at https://order.chipotle.com
It’s surprising that the iPhone has been out for over a year, yet this is the first online ordering application designed specifically for the iPhone. Papa Johns and Pizza Hut both have mobile web ordering interfaces, but no native iPhone application. Without a native application, the companies can’t automatically determine your closest store.
This is the second major mobile commerce announcement in as many months. Amazon released an iPhone application that allows shoppers to buy items online from anywhere with a data connection. The application also lets you snap a picture of any item and tries to find the cheapest alternative among Amazon retailers.
