As of this spring, AT&T will be launching a satellite television service for cars called CruiseCast. The service will launch with 20 channels from major television networks like MSNBC, USA, Discovery, Comedy Central and Cartoon Network.
The CruiseCast service will be available for a $28 per month subscription charge. However the real cost may be getting the antenna installed on your car. The antenna retails for $1299 before installation, so it might be too much for all but the most serious road warrior.
CruiseCast is much more likely to catch on if it’s built into new model cars. But what percentage of new car owners will sign up for the additional service or want to have it included in the cost of their vehicle? That question makes including the CruiseCast on new model cars a gamble for auto makers.
Hopefully AT&T can find a less expensive solution for its antenna and receiver kit. Otherwise the CruiseCast might only make sense for small niches like RVs and the constant traveler. Check out the details on the CruiseCast product page.
