NIMble concept home phone running Android

While a home phone concept seems like the last thing you would expect for an Android device, this home tablet could find uses well beyond what you might expect. The Touch Revolution NIMble concept home phone is a $300 home phone concept that is expected to be available in September.

The NIMble runs Google’s Android operating system and will come with a low-priced VoIP calling plan. The device will also act as your answering machine, recording messages and even emailing them to you if you want. However, since the NIMble connects the Web and can have other applications installed, the possibilities for its use are limitless.

Imagine the NIMble as a command center for your entire home. You could use it as a home entertainment center remote control that can also allow you to check email and Facebook. Add to that the ability to control your home automation system to set ambient lighting. Or keep it in your kitchen to track the grocery lists and leave notes for family members.

Or you can imagine NIMble as a device not unlike the cult hit, the Chumby. You can set it up to get the weather, your Facebook account, new email and other small tasks. At $300 it’s not too expensive to buy as a household web terminal for looking up quick things that come up in conversation or checking recipes while cooking.

One thing that seems to be lacking from this model is an actual phone itself. You know, like the kind you pick up and put to your ear. Either it’s slyly hidden on the side or they actually expect you to use the speaker-phone all. the. time. Call me old-fashioned, but I think you ought to be able to pick up the phone so your calls don’t go echoing throughout the entire house.

The NIMble device has bluetooth to use with a bluetooth handset or headset… so you won’t have to use the speaker phone all the time :-)
