The wait to make VoIP calls on your T-Mobile G1 or Kogan Agora phone is coming to an end. Skype is prepared to release the first version of Skype Lite for the Android client in the next few days. All that’s left is a few days of incessantly checking the App Market for the application to get loaded.
Skype already has a basic Java-based Lite client in testing and versions for the N810 tablet and Windows Mobile phones. It’s really interesting that Android users will get a Skype application before iPhone users. It could be that Skype already had a Java application under development or the iTunes App Store’s notoriously tight approval process.
There’s no word yet on the cost structure for the Android Skype Lite client yet. The Java-based mobile client uses cell phone minutes as well as Skype minutes for off-network calls. In contrast, the Windows Mobile version of Skype can make free Skype calls using a Wi-Fi or 3G connection without using plan minutes.
It would be a terrible disappointment if Android users can’t make calls over their data connection. T-Mobile could choose to filer VoIP traffic, but Wi-Fi calling would be wide open. I’ll share the Android Skype pricing details as the emerge.
