iPhone users are still fairly limited in terms of VoIP or Skype calling. Truphone’s Skype application offers a great interface that is primarily built as a Skype Messenger. You can still only make Skype calls over a WiFi connection, but that isn’t likely to change in the App Store any time soon.
Truphone is another alternative to the Fring Messenger, which I’m a big fan of. Truphone was originally built for Symbian phones, but now over half of its users on the iPhone. Truphone has a slightly cleaner interface than Fring, which is more of an IM client that can do Skype than the reverse.
Other than Truphone and Fring, the only other option for Skype calling on the iPhone is Nimbuzz. This is a service that routes calls from your mobile phone onto the Skype network, but it uses both your mobile minutes and Skype minutes at the same time, a method I’m not terribly fond of. It’s handy if you do a lot of International calling, but I have a hard time seeing the benefit otherwise.
