Slingplayer Mobile coming to an iPhone near you

Sling Media is set to announce that the iPhone version of their Slingplayer Mobile application should be available in the first quarter of this year. Sling Media’s products let you view your television and DVR video from any computer or mobile phone with a Slingplayer client and an Internet connection.

While the iPhone version of Slingplayer mobile will be submitted, it may take some time to make it through the App Store approval process. Slingplayer Mobile for iPhone will join the lineup that already consists of versions for the Blackberry, Palm, Symbian and Windows Mobile platform. Sling hasn’t announced the pricing, but the Blackberry version runs $29.99 for a lifetime license.

This is a really interesting way to make your videos available via the cloud on your mobile phone. I’m curious how the experience is over a 3G network and whether it buffers constantly or degrades the content. The one downside to relying on an Internet-based system for your video is that it’s not available when you’re offline.

Any Slingplayer Mobile users that can share their experience with the application? How are the playback quality? Load times? Is it worth the effort of setting up the SlingBox and player systems?
