While there’s nothing like cold hard cash as a Christmas Bonus during the holidays, many cash-strapped companies are forgoing the tradition this year. Google is no exception to this trend, ending the era of 5-figure bonuses for its employees.

However, Google has decided to hand out G1 phones to all Googlers to not only serve as a pat on the back, but also as a widespread test of the devices. This should also serve as encouragement to develop new features and applications and hopefully sealing the unfinished edges of the first generation device.

This practice, known as dogfooding amongst high technology organizations, can sometimes leave a bad taste in employees mouth. And while some may be bitter after pre-spending their expected holiday cash infusion, it sure beats getting an actual pat on the back.
