The iPhone Dev team has been working on a 3G unlock and is targeted a January 30th release date. While there may be issues unlocking previously jailbroken iPhone 3Gs that didn’t preserve the radio baseband, it should work on most devices.
The video lasts about 4 minutes and gives you a fairly good idea that the unlock is legit, but won’t serve as a complete tutorial for the forthcoming ‘yellowsn0w’ unlock tool. Once the tool is released, hopefully the Dev Team or one of its followers will release a full tutorial for iPhone-hungry users with commitments to other carriers.
We’ll just have to see if this new capability spurs a renaissance of 3G iPhone sales, which are just starting to taper off after blowing the doors off of Analysts’ expectations. If nothing else, this should create a hopping underground 3G market for those looking to upgrade to an even newer device.

Do you know when the software unlock will be available for 2.2.1?
