Anyone looking to use an iPhone on a carrier than other AT&T could be getting a nice gift in their stocking this holiday season. The iPhone Dev Team has announced that it hopes to have the first carrier unlocking tool for the iPhone 3G out on New Year’s eve.
While that may be too late for holiday gift giving, hackers have been looking for a way around the carrier lock on the 3G iPhone since its release. Just don’t update your Mac OS X machine to 10.5.6 if you expect to unlock your phone quickly. The Mac OS X update released yesterday is creating issues for the iPhone jailbreak tools created by the Dev Team.
It will be interesting to see if the iPhone 3G unlock creates a spike in sales. Now that the excitement over the new 3G version is starting to die off, it’s possible that the ability to use the phones on other carrier’s networks renews demand for the devices.
Here are the only guidelines for unlocking your iPhone 3G:
- The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
- This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
- The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.
- iPhone 3G unlock ‘yellowsn0w’ preview prior to New Year’s Eve release
- iPhone 2.2 PwnageTool and QuickPwn jailbreak tools released
- Want an unlocked Android G1? That’ll be $399
- iPhone getting MMS soon, but not tethering
- AIM now a full Facebook and Twitter client
