The iPhone 2.2 firmware was released last week, adding features such as Google Streetview and direct podcast downloads over the device’s 3G data network connection. Now the iPhone Dev Team has released the tools to jailbreak the 2.2 update and allow for other applications on the device.
While the iPhone Dev Team still hasn’t quite cracked the code on unlocking the iPhone 3G from AT&T, it has released tools to jailbreak the 3G phones in terms of installing new applications. The iPhone Dev Team doesn’t recommend jailbreaking your iPhone 3G if you have any intentions of SIM unlocking the network in the near future.
The PwnageTool and QuickPwn applications both run on Mac OS X and the QuickPwn tool also has a Windows version as well. The PwnAge tool for Mac provides a little more control over the process, but the QuickPwn utility should work for most purposes if you’re running Windows.
Since the iPod Touch 2.2 was just released, the Dev Team hasn’t released any tools for unlocking the brand new devices. The team has released the tools as bittorrent files, but you can also find a list of mirrors in the announcement.
