iRiver’s roots in consumer electronic devices, much like Apple, are in the form of portable MP3 players that play music and video. However, the company has been quietly working on a touchscreen phone called the Wave that is coming to Korea on March 9th.
The iRiver W10 Wave features full media player functionality including a 3″ touch screen for watching video files, 4 GB of internal memory expandable via the SD slot and data connection via a cellular data network or Wi-Fi. The release is currently being limited to Korea and there’s no word as to whether iRiver will bring the Wave to the US.
The concept of a converged portable media player (PMP) and phone sounds fairly promising. The only thing that I would question in that regard is the fairly anemic internal storage of the device as a PMP. While SD cards can buy users a little more space, most PMP buyers store their music and video collection on their device and 4 GB may be too constrictive.
