Apple iPhone passes RIM in second year

Sometimes it’s hard to remember that the first iPhone hit the streets just last year at the end of June. Already in its second generation, the iPhone has become the hottest selling smartphone in the US and has grabbed a significant amount of the global smartphone market.

How significant a share of the market you ask? Analysts at Canalys are reporting that in just about 16 months, the iPhone has ousted RIM as the number two maker of smartphones worldwide. RIM’s Blackberry device are the most widespread enterprise mobile phone and email devices on the market. Nokia’s Symbian is still controls nearly 40 percent of the smartphone market share, but the iPhone is eking away at Nokia’s edge already.

It’s not immediately clear whether Apple has ousted RIM as the leading US smartphone-maker. As recently as June, RIM boasted one third of the US smartphone market to Apple’s tenth. Since that time, Apple has released it’s next generation iPhone 3G that has been outpacing sales estimates month after month.
