Simple Outlook to Android G1 Sync Solution

We’ve been chronicling the trials and tribulations of new T-Mobile G1 owners as they attempt to go all-Google for their online and mobile phone data management. The Google Contacts CSV format is drastically different than virtually any other contact format. There are various ways to go about syncing your contacts to Google.

So, just this once, Microsoft Office users have the edge in anything technical. Ever. Check out the simple solution after the jump.

Mac users have a simple sync tool. built into the latest OS X release, but don’t be fooled. It will mangle your contacts and it will be too late to deal with the duplicates and formatting issues without having to delete them all and start over.

Funambol also has a plugin for Android. They’ve actually just released the official version here.

You can also download our CSV template file and mangle the one you export from your contacts to look like it.

The Simple Workaround

However Outlook users have a simple, but not-so-intuitive alternative that makes life really easy. If you Export your Contacts CSV file in DOS format instead of Windows, your Google Contacts will sync like a dream.

While this may not be much solace for Mac, Windows Mobile, Verizon or any other user, it helps cover a lot of ground when trying to sync your G1. Props to TGD reader Chad for finding this little gem.

Dont try and import CSV (DOS) into Gmail, just copy the CSV (DOS) file right onto the SD card of your G1 using the USB cable. Easy fix, there they are, gmail will then sync itself with your G1

O and about funomobil, now I have to share all my friends contacts, emails and cellphone numbers with funomobile so they can sell them for 3 cents a piece and my friends spend the next ten years deleting junkmail and getting annoyed by commercial SMS messages in the middle of the night?? And guess what, when funomobile site is down, so is your sync. Why cant we sync outlook with Gmail, is it really that hard??

Thats BS and you should not promote a commercial site that is going to sell you and your friends information for pennies.

Thank you for the idea! Also, I don’t trust Google with all my contact info (we already know what they do with data), let alone Funomobil or whatever. So thank you to Arashi for reminding me! (l_l )/
