So you’ve pre-ordered your T-Mobile G1 and are anxiously awaiting its arrival next week, huh? You lucky dog, you. However, you’re frantically scouring the Internet looking for applications to meet your basic needs, like being constantly connected to family, friends and online acquaintances through a bevy of social networks, including Twitter.
Luckily there are tons of awesome developers creating full-featured Android applications for anything and everything they want to use and releasing them for the enjoyment of the community. While you may not have your T-Mobile G1 phone in your hands yet, you can start checking out the best applications for getting online via a mobile Twitter client before you even get your grubby little hands on the device.

This project was made as a proof of concept by Davanum Srinivas to illustrate how to create a basic Twitter application for Android. It will basically allow you to browse updates and create new status messages in a simple clean interface. This client will likely appeal to minimalists, but most advanced users will want more features.
His blog has the source code, but the screenshots and downloads are missing, so I’m hosting a copy of the .ZIP download twitterclient file here.
TwitterDroid was created as a clone of Twitterific, a popular iPhone Twitter client, by Fred Brunel. he created it first as a public alpha, then released the source for the community to build upon. This is another fairly basic application with a cool logo and smooth black user interface. You can download it from Fred’s blog.
Trak is a bit more advanced and incorporates location-based technology along with Twitter. It uses GPS to broadcast your location along with Tweets and uses a map view to display your Twitter stream. It’s not specific as to where it’s pulling the location from, whether it’s your Twitter location using the Twitter geolocation API or another method. If anyone gets a chance to check it out, please let me know. You can download Twitter Trak client here.
TwitRoid is currently in private alpha and targeting a release date some time in mid-October. The user interface looks really fantastic to me, as I’m a big fan of preserving a site’s inherent look and feel when creating a client. It also has facilities for managing Direct Messages which would be really handy while on the road. You can check on the TwitRoid release date and inquire about testing the app on the TwitRoid site.
That’s all of the Twitter clients out there at the moment for Android, but there are sure to be more. Do you have any favorites or recommendations? Have you head about a new Twitter application that’s just been released?
Is so, please contact me at tipdave (at) gmail (dotcom).
