The iPhone backgrounder was recently released by developers as a way to keep applications running after they have been closed on a jailbroken iPhone. The iPhone was designed to terminate applications when closed out, but some users want the ability to keep IM or other applications running all day long or while performing other tasks.
The implementation of the iPhone backgrounder is fairly simple. All you have to do after installing the application is to hold down the home button as you’re closing an application to allow it to continue running. You can also tell the backgrounder to keep particular applications running after shutdown by identifying them in an XML file. This method makes it even easier if you just need one application like IM to stay live.
The obvious limitation here is that you have to jailbreak your iPhone in order for it to work. Apple has resolved not to make this feature available for users in order to keep the iPhone running smoothly. If too many applications are running in the background, the device could become slow or even unresponsive to users.
