Handango has announced that it will be opening a mobile applications store to distribute premium content to Android users within weeks of the G1 release on Oct 22. The store will offer downloads of premium content and a payment system that will be able to distribute applications on a free, one-time fee or subscription basis. Handango CEO Bill Stone hopes that customers “will want to try the Android device but are comfortable purchasing from Handango.”
If Handango can release a paid marketplace before Google, it could have an edge in forming partnerships with premium application companies. EA was waiting to work with a provider that will enable them to charge for Android games. Hamdango already distributes applications for the Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Palm and Symbian devices, and is aggressively pursuing the emerging Android market.
