Google Labs has just released a new group SMS distribution tool in India that allows users to create and subscribe to SMS Alerts on the Web. Subscribers can join channels that will send breaking World news, Technology or Daily Quotes to be delivered to their handsets.
Once you join the service, you can then create a Channel of your own and allow others to subscribe to it. There are already hundreds of channels that help users follow anything from Job Alerts, to Astrology or even someone’s daily life.
The service is only available right now in India, but it’s free of charge. It will be interesting to see whether this project grows enough to spread to other countries and whether Google will opt to create an API around it. That would be a really great way to build services around SMS and other Google products.
