One of the major criticisms of the newly announced G1 phone is that it does not have a native application for syncing contacts with desktop computers. While this capability doesn’t come installed, there’s already a solution for syncing that was created to work as a plug-in in Android to sync with Funambol and your Windows, Mac or Linux PC.
Funambol has already released their Android plugin well in advance of the G1, the first Android phone on the market. You can check out instructions on how to install and use the plugin in an emulator on the blog of Fabrizio Capobianco, the CEO of Funambol.
From there, you just need to enable desktop syncing of your contacts as well. Funambol has an Outlook plugin that makes it very easy to sync with Windows machines. There’s also a utility that allows you to sync with the Evolution mail client running on either Mac or Linux called SyncEvolution.
You can try out the Beta service at http://my.funambol.com
UPDATE: Funambol has official Android plugin packages here.
