NVIDIA has announced their new Tegra line of chips that are specifically designed with mobile internet and HD capability in mind. Their goal was to raise the bar for mobile computing power and graphics capabilities while drastically reducing the amount of power consumption by your mobile device. The original Tegra APX 2500 is currently being showcased in the next generation of Windows Mobile devices. With an 800 MH ARM core and NVIDIA’s graphics capabilities, Windows Mobile should start stacking up against the iPhone as an integrated multimedia device.
The newly announced NVIDIA 650 also includes:
* All-day media processing, for 130 hours audio, 30 hours HD video playback
* HD image processing for advanced digital still camera and HD camcorder functions
* Optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications for a true desktop-class internet experience
* Display support for 1080p HDMI, WSXGA+ LCD and CRT, and NTSC/PAL TV-Out
* Direct support for WiFi, disk drives, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals
* A complete Board Support Package (BSP) to enable fast times to market for Windows Mobile-based designs
With Flash getting ready to hit Windows Mobile and iPhone, video is set to take the mobile web by storm. This new Tegra line should help to improve resolution dramatically and give mobile devices the playtime necessary to warrant being used as an entertainment device. Early signs show users are interested in watching video on their handsets and NVIDIA is helping to bolster adoption.
