PimpMyNews is a service that allows you to listen to your favorite news and blog stories on your computer, iPhone, iPod or virtually any mp3 player. If you’re a big fan of talk radio and want to keep up to date with the latest news from your industry, this is a really cool way to do it.
You can sign up for free from your desktop computer or from your iPhone at http://pimpmynews.com/m. From there, you select your favorite news outlets and blogs from their directory and build your stream. It’s available to stream right away from the PimpMyNews site and it only takes 15 minutes for them to compile your podcast file. It’s updated every day with the latest stories from the blogs that you selected.
This could be a great way to catch up on news in the morning on your way to work. Since podcasts are a pretty universal consumption format for audio, it makes it very easy to bring your news with you everywhere. Obviously the iPod and iPhone set have support for podcasting out of the box. You can also use a podcatcher to grab your stream for other MP3 players. You can even play your podcast while you surf the web from the Winamp browser toolbar or Firefox’s podcast plugin. This is also really cool in terms of accessibility of blogs and news for the vision impaired.
PimpMyNews has been getting some really great press lately as an iPhone Staff Pick and Scoble iPhone Favorite. I met John Atkinson, one of the co-founders at the Tech Cocktail conference in Chicago and he was a really nice guy. He thought it was funny that I called it burning a podcast from a blog, but I guess using CD terminology for this online tool is kind of an apt description. You can follow John and keep an eye on PimpMyNews at http://twitter.com/johnatkinson.
