Comcast.net Hacked Or Was It THE Network Solutions DNS?

or

Comcast.net users were unable to access the site for technical support, news or their even their email today after hackers hijacked the domain. The site put up in the place of the Comcast.net site reportedly said that hackers “RoXeD” Comcast. This is obviously a major blow to their online reputation in terms of security, which is a major concern in trusting a company with your personal email, but is that deserved?

The press release from the Associated Press states that the hackers seized control of the Comcast.net domain from the Network Solutions domain servers. These domain servers are the ultimate authority that tell web browsers where every .com and .net website is in the entire world. This attack doesn’t just threaten Comcast.net. If the hackers have gained access to the Network Solutions domain servers, they can basically re-write the entire phone directory of the internet.

This means that any .com site that you visit could be at risk for silly hijinks such as this relatively minor replacing of web content to the ability to redirect users to malicious sites or to steal usernames and passwords from unsuspecting users of virtually any site. As of yet, Network Solutions has not issued a release on their corporate Newsroom.
