Earth Trek just announced their new 90-805R Mobile Projector, touting it as the smallest projector in the world. At just 4″x2″ and only 1″ tall it boasts 22″ diagonal projection from a unit the size of a mobile phone. So far, it looks as though it accepts input from flash cards or AV and no word on USB. It also has a built in speaker and a battery included that lasts 1-2 hours. That sounds fine for an impromptu presentation, but you’ll want a plug nearby if you’re planning to use it for watching a movie.
Earth Trek is touting it as the smallest projector in the world, though I’m sure it won’t hold that title for very long. This can be a great way to facilitate business on the go while reducing the burden of bringing your own equipment. It’s likely to be a niche market for the near future, but what is the future of this kind of capability?
As mobile device functionality continues to merge, I could see a micro-projector being added on to PMD (Portable Media Devices). That way you could carry your library of movies around and plug them into a PC, TV or simply broadcast them against a nearby wall. As media functionality is built into devices, could we also see this being added onto mobile phones? Obviously this is still too bulky to add onto a cell phone right now, but how long before we have phones that broadcast, “Help us Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re our only hope?”
