SocialText provides enterprise wiki solutions that bridge the gap between the web and mobile web and include hosted solutions and user-based security. My goal was much simpler: find a way to write Grocery Lists, Take Notes or Brainstorm via a wiki solution on my cell phone. It turns out they can do that too.
While the Enterprise solutions require a subscription fee, you can get your own personal wiki with a mobile interface for free. They also allow you to add up to 5 free users on your wiki in case you want to work on a project together on the go. You will need to go to their web site from your desktop to set up your account and confirm via email. They start you off with a 14 day trial of their Enterprise Solution and force you to downgrade to the Personal Edition, but you’ll be up and running in no time.
To get to the mobile interface took a little bit of work. For the web version, your wiki page will be http://www.socialtext.net/username. To get to your mobile page, go to http://www.socialtext.net/lite/page/username. You will have to log in and can set it to remember you via a cookie. Once you’re logged in, just bookmark your wiki homepage and you’re ready to begin.
You can just click on the Edit button at the top of any page to begin editing. If you want to start a new page, just type in the name with square brackets around it and it will automatically be created when you click Save. Example: [New Page]
A mobile wiki is a great way to jot down your thoughts while you’re away from your desk. Whether you’re riding on a train or waiting for a meeting, you can organize and record your ideas to use later. It’ll be interesting to see how often I’m just hanging around and want to take down my thoughts.
