Google Health Launches for Portable Medical Records

Google has launched their brand new Google Health service today. Google Health allows you to enter in your medical information and keep track of your medical records all in one place. Once you compile all of your medical data into Google Health, you can then choose to share your information with new healthcare providers at the touch of a button.

The real challenge with medical records services is around the complex privacy regulations laid out by HIPPAA. Storing people’s medical records requires serious consideration into how you collect, store and share those individual’s personal and sensitive data.

Although they’re not the first to enter the medical records management space online, Google has a number of advantages. One of which is that online users already know and trust the Google brand. This means that they aren’t sharing their intimate details with a new partner, just expanding the information in your current Google profile. Another advantage for Google is their sheer size. Medical providers and insurance companies are more likely to integrate with Google Health, making the service more useful to users. You can currently import medical data from 8 separate providers and pharmacies, and share your data with 14 different healthcare institutions representing thousands of doctors.

You can check out this new Google service at http://www.google.com/health. While I’m not sure that I actually *need* a medical records management service today, this is a leading option if I were to join any such service. Check out the Screenshots after the jump.
