TouchBrowser Mobile Browser Gets Reviewed

Makayama recently announced the release of their Touchbrowser for Windows Mobile Pocket PC’s. Their goal is to provide touch-based panning around web pages similar to Safari on iPhone.

After playing with TouchBrowser 1.0.1, I have to say its a great first start. The keypad was very usable with my finger within portrait mode, though it would have been more usable if it was QWERTY. The browser’s auto detection of an available mobile site was quite good, though the zoom function only appeared to control the font size. There is a button to control mobile versus desktop browser however I couldn’t see a difference on any of my usual test sites. Cut and paste is still not available to other applications within Windows Mobile 6, though this is common of 3rd party applications. The interface tracking over large sites left a little be desired for smoothness, though it was still usable. I look forward to a more robust release to review.

The browser appears to be based on PIE, so some of the errors and occasional logo show up while usage. Makayama does have quite a few other applications that I do look forward to trying out, in addition to later releases of their browser. All in all, I’m not sure that I would pay for a product that still needs to work out the kinks in the user interface.
