DC Area Traffic Updates via Twitter

Twitter Logo

Twitter.com/thebeltway publishes real-time traffic incident updates from around the DC Metro area. It’s basically a mashup that pulls feeds from Traffic.com and Yahoo Maps and displays them on Twitter. This is a really cool use for SMS notifications on Twitter as it can help you to dodge traffic in real time.

The feed is administered by Andrea Baker, a local Web 2.0 evangelist. I think it’s pretty cool, though it would be nice to be able to customize the feed somewhat. The feed includes traffic incidents from both the DC and Baltimore beltways. It might be nice to even get a NoVA specific feed to check out.

Hey Dave, thanks for the shoutout on Twitter. Would have replied to your blog sooner, but I didn’t get to do so until now. I am out at the web 2.0 expo in San Francisco this week and hope to learn more about what I can do to make the beltway on twitter better. You can customize the feed somewhat by following it and then tracking certain keywords so the direct messages go to your phone. Instead of a bunch of noise for routes you do not care about. Most of it is RSS, but some updates are manual if we can catch the reporting by others and if its something I see on the road, like the backups with the Pope in town or something on the GW Parkway. There is so much we want to do with it.

I also want to add this is the brainchild of not only myself, but Steve Mandzik aka robotchampion on twitter.

Again thanks for your blog and for the feedback.

I also manage the unofficial twitter.com/OPM for those who want to know about Federal Government news and closings.
