Yahoo Portal Redesigned for Search?

Yahoo Logo

This morning we awoke to a brand new, redesigned Yahoo homepage featuring a centered logo. Rather than having the Yahoo location on the left with a Search box on the right, the Logo is centered and the Search box is underneath it. Mashable has a good side-by-side comparison for you to check out.

The puzzling thing about this shuffling is that it actually moves the start of Yahoo’s portal content down. This means that less of the portal links will be displayed “above the fold,” where users will see them on first glance. The design isn’t more attractive in my opinion and uses more of the available screen real estate. So why would Yahoo push some of their content below the fold?

My sneaking suspicion is that the new design is meant to emphasize Yahoo Search and drive higher search queries. Notice how your eye keeps getting pulled back to top center rather than the featured content box. It’s good to see Yahoo taking a risk with their layout and targeting Google’s share of the Search market. As of yet we haven’t seen a portal that’s fast enough and with a focus on Search to give Google a run for its money.

What do you think?
