Leaked Windows Mobile 6.1 gets Reviewed

Windows Mobile

I had a chance to get my hands on a Windows Mobile 6.1 homebrew release late last night. You might be asking what all the noise is about this new release on the web? Windows Mobile phones are likely the most hacked mobile phones on the market today. There’s a strong Pocket PC Developer Community and are compatible with virtually any hardware.

WinMo 6.1 is only an incremental release, so I’m only expecting to see a few minor differences. Here are the differences that I’ve noticed at first blush:

Threaded SMS: Your text messages are now displayed as a conversation with a person instead of a generic inbox. This is especially cool when you’re texting back and forth with someone, and makes your inbox look a lot tidier. I was worried that it might be awkward to step back into a conversation from the alert, but it was smooth as pie. Speaking of PIE…

PIE Zoom: Pocket Internet Explorer has been outfitted with a Zoom capability somewhat similar to Safari mobile. The browser still doesn’t fully support javascript, but also doesn’t seem to crash when you browse a site with javascript in it.

Smoother Edges: I noticed that the settings menu seems to be a bit better organized. They also worked out the kinks that I experienced in both email setup function and syncing.

My overall verdict is that it’s a keeper. I’ll see how it manages memory as I get all my applications loaded again.
