Long before Gizmodo’s CES hijinks last week, traditional media has been questioning the value of blogs and whether they are simply a fad. Here are the top 10 reasons that we love blogs and believe that they’re here to stay.
10. Blogs are raw and real
Just like reality television, blogs can provide a voyeuristic look into a complete stranger’s life. Note: Not everything you do is interesting, so lifeblogging is a still a bad idea. Do you hear me?
9. People want real opinions
We’re all tired of being marketed to, sold, cajoled and otherwise violated by bulls#it advertising. The number one this or first-in-class that. Blogs provide instant access to honest reviews by normal people on thousands of products.
8. Blogs are allowed to be funny.
When Family Guy breaks into showtunes it’s funny. If 60 Minutes broke into showtunes it would lose all journalistic integrity. Not to mention the fact that Andy Rooney would probably have a heart attack on the spot.
7. Blogs provide news ‘on demand.’
I don’t care who got kicked off of American Idol or Oprah’s new cable network. With blogs it’s easy. You only read or subscribe to blogs that are written on topics that you care about.
6. Expertise and insight
Seth Godin is recognized for his expertise and insight into the web industry. He’s a successful entrepreneur, a well-read author and a prolific blogger. I promise, it’s not a dirty word.
5. Blogs have a human voice
There’s not much difference between the talking heads that sell me toothpaste or sell us my news. Bloggers act and sound a lot more like us. Funny, could it be because they actually are normal people just like us?
4. Debate brings clarity
When bloggers argue and support their assertions, they’re arming their readers with the knowledge to make a decision for themselves.
3. Bloggers are not ‘the man’
We’re all naturally suspicious of major corporations. The Chairman of News Corp, Rupert Murdoch, endorses a presidential candidate even though he owns Fox News, how can we expect that his company will be any more objective than he is?
2. Information is like crack
Blogs update constantly and, coincidentally, that’s exactly when I want my news. I check my favorite sites while word is loading, when I’m on the phone, even on my pda while walking between meetings. Sure. Act like it’s just me.
1. Snarkiness
Sometimes a little snark is perfectly well in order. How many times can you break the news about Britney flashing random passersby without a little snark? Honestly.
