Bebo’s Open Strategy

Bebo

Bebo has made a flurry of announcements in the last few weeks that demonstrate a fundamental commitment to open standards and open collaboration. Not only will Bebo participate in Google’s Opensocial initiative, they’re also building a toolkit to easily migrate Facebook applications. This move could allow them to build the most impressive catalog of applications out of all the major players in the social networking space.

Less than two weeks later, Bebo is releasing new video modules with licensed content from providers like BBC and MTV. That means that Bebo users can put video and music clips on their profiles and share them with friends. This popular functionality has been problematic on other sites such as Myspace because the tools often violate the copyright holder’s rights. However, Bebo is simply allowing these companies to publish modules and promoting it as a free word of mouth advertising.
