This week I’ve had a chance to check out the new social networking playground from Yahoo! known as Mash. After asking for a few others’ opinions, I kept getting the question, “Do we need another social networking site?” Touche!, however I wanted to see what those Yahooligans have been cooking up
Overall I was fairly impressed. Basically everything on your profile can be updated dynamically, meaning there’s virtually never a need to reload a page. Another interesting twist is that any of your friends can modify your profile and vice versa. That’s an interesting angle, but I’m not sure if it is really that helpful.
Another interesting thing that I noted was that not only are the available modules fairly sparse, they haven’t released developer tools for you to create your own. They have many of the basics covered- flickr, rss, and a basic content module, but that module only accepts html and not javascript?!
Overall, I have to wait and see. The ease of use could draw users, but without module developers, they’ll get bored very quickly. If you enjoy a good mashing, say hello!
