I really love my Windows Mobile phone. Despite the squirrelly wifi and occasional reboot, it’s the only device that I know of that excels as a development platform for both hardware and software. The only thing that really has me holding my breath in terms of Windows Mobile devices is for GPS chips to become commonplace. That’s why yesterday was a very special day for me.
First up is the HTC Touch Cruise (codename Polaris):
HTC makes the bulk of, and the best, Windows Mobile phones. They recently began their foray into embedded gps with the HTC Kaiser, which was aptly names as it would be the king of any pocket you might try to jam it into. HTC also recently introduced a 3-d multi-touch interface in the HTC Touch. Jam those things together into a reasonably sizes phone and you have the HTC Touch Cruise which was announced yesterday. Ain’t it purdy?
In the midst of all my excitement about HTC’s announcement came another one from Imate on their 9502 smartphone, also based on windows mobile. Imate ‘borrowed’ form factors from both the HTC line and the feel of the Sidekick along with GPS and QVGA out.
I probably won’t be able to get either of these for a generation or so, but it’s definitely time to start saving my lunch money.
